Anthusa Toguri is Iva’s mother. She lived in Argentum until the party walked her out of the city, and now has a room at the Sisters' farm.1
Biography
Session 4
Iva realized she had put a name on her forged transfer papers that could be traced, and feared that an investigation into her would reach Anthusa as well. Asked outright whether her mother was involved with the Tarnar Syndicate or magical, Iva lied, and Temerity saw it.2
Hazel offered Anthusa the room she grew up in at the Sisters’ farm, saying she would put her life on the line like that once and no more.2 Iva and Temerity went to Anthusa’s house that night to warn her that Iva’s cover might be blown and that she might have to leave the city.2
Session 5
Anthusa left Argentum with the party on 26 Coldrise, 1714 PSF, bound for the safe haven promised her near Silverthorn. She had never been further from the city than the outer works.3 At Luma’s apartment, Hazel warned her that it lay on the border of the Vale, where the protection was weakening. Anthusa cleaned up a spill of ink with a word and a gesture, and said her magic amounted to the basics.3 She did not mind getting her hands dirty, she said, and it could not be worse than the inside of an Order prison.3
On the road she told the others that as a child Iva had not yet learned to hold a face, so being around people was dangerous for her, and that joining the Order of the Lantern brought her out of her shell.3 When Iva said she could have horns like Temerity, Anthusa quietly told her that was a little forward.3
At Crick's Bend, Wellby Emberthumb gave her Temerity’s old room. She helped him cook dinner and sat beside him at the table, deep in conversation.3 She did not answer “the flame provides” after grace.3 Asked by Emberthumb whether she was married, she said she never had been, and that Iva is adopted.3
Session 6
Anthusa took coffee with Wellby Emberthumb in the church kitchen on the morning of 27 Coldrise, 1714 PSF, answering his questions about life in Argentum, and he gave her the pastry Hazel had sent without being asked.1 She walked north with the party that day and hid in the treeline with them when the Light Wardens rode past.1
Before they went into the Sisters' farm she told Iva not to mention any connection to the Order of the Lantern while they were there.1 When Hecate asked which of them was staying, Anthusa stepped forward and said her magic amounted to a little hedge wizardry, tricks picked up over many years. Hecate said that made no difference, since it put her in the same amount of danger either way, and gave her a room in the house for as long as she needed it, so long as she was willing to help with the work. Anthusa looked to Iva, who nodded, and the two of them hugged before she went inside to find Freya.1 She ate at the kitchen table and went to bed tired from the walk.1
Session 7
Asked what reward she wanted for the night’s work, Iva asked the coven to go on sheltering her mother. Hecate wiped clean any debt either of them owed the coven and said Anthusa would stay as long as she was able and willing, under the coven’s full protection.4
Session 8
Anthusa was in the farmhouse kitchen with Freya when Iva came to say goodbye, and her attention went straight to Iva, whose new form did not seem to put her off at all. She crossed the room without a word to hug her, said she had survived worse than a few chickens and some hay, and that she was far more worried about Iva, who had never had to give up an identity she had held so long.5 “I can’t pretend I’m not worried for you, but I’m very proud of you,” she said, and that she had always been able to tell Iva would help people. Iva answered that her mother taught her how.5 Hecate confirmed that Anthusa has the coven’s full protection.5
Session 9
Iva told the party that Anthusa had done her best raising a shapeshifter, though she could not answer all of Iva’s questions, and had kept her indoors most of the time until Iva learned to control her ability.6 Hazel said the coven was not her family, “especially not Anthusa”.6
