Session 3 covered the afternoon of 25 Coldrise, 1714 PSF, in the sewers beneath Argentum. The party hunted Miles Quickstep underground, saw more of each other’s magic than any of them intended, and came up with him in custody.
Synopsis
Down the Hatch
Rhysaene met up with Hazel, and the two of them set out to find the others. Luma, Temerity and Iva were collecting a civic key for the sewer entrance. Luma steered the whole thing so that the five of them met on a bridge, and at the entrance she rigged a block and tackle to lower Rhysaene down. She drew a lamp for the dark as well.
She did not tell them why finding each other had been so easy. Both Hazel and Rhysaene were carrying artificer maps she had planted in their bags the day before, which let her know where they were.
Rats
The party heard buzzing from one room, stirges by the sound of it, and left it alone. Hazel investigated a stack of barrels instead and was swarmed. Four swarms of rats and four giant rats attacked.
The fight went badly at first. Temerity raged with silver fire burning from her eyes and cut through the swarms. Rhysaene cast mind sliver, which only Hazel noticed, then drew a greatsword out of her own chest. Luma, bitten and panicking, stepped through the Canvas using the party’s maps as markers and loosed fourteen conjured arrows into a swarm.
Hazel put moonbeam down on three swarms at once, catching Iva in it on the reckoning that she could take it. The light forced Iva into her true faceless form in front of everyone except Temerity, who was still raging. Iva turned away and shifted back. Temerity killed the last swarm, came out of the rage, asked whether everyone was all right, and did not appear to remember any of it. Luma spent ten minutes picking her caltrops back up.
The Short Rest
Hazel asked whether the silver fire was another blessing of the Silver Flame, and Temerity said it was: since she was young she has been able to let the fire consume her in a crisis, and she keeps little memory of what happens while it does. Asked what she did remember of the fight, she recalled the rats, and running to stop two larger ones reaching the others.
Iva spent the rest with her knees pulled up to her chest. Hazel would not look at her. Rhysaene put a hand on her shoulder. Temerity took a nap.
The Ooze
Further on, something came up out of the sewer water: a heap of maroon matter that Luma thought looked like congealed wine. Hazel had felt deeply unsettled before it showed itself, a feeling she had never had before and yet found oddly familiar.
Temerity saw the others casting before she raged again. Iva took a blow on her shield that would otherwise have landed hard on Temerity. Luma lit the thing up with faerie fire, and they killed it. Afterwards Hazel held a hand shining with pale silver light over Rhysaene, and a green fog rolled in and closed her wounds.
The Ferryman
Luma found a secret door, and behind it Miles Quickstep, the child Brundun and a man who gave his name as Silas Wintermist. Temerity went straight at Miles and Silas stopped her.
The conversation that followed was mostly Temerity’s, and she would not be moved off arresting him. Silas laid out the two ways it could go: let Miles slip through the cracks and the Tarnar Syndicate would owe the party a favor, or turn him in, let Miles take the fall, and the party would owe the Syndicate one. They chose to turn him in. Before they left, Miles handed Hazel the ritual reagents she had paid for. The session ended at about four in the afternoon.
