A stone defender is a dwarf-sized construct of stone and metal.1 Two guarded a hidden workshop in Vault 18 of the sealed Underforge Vaults beneath Argentum, until the party destroyed them on the Vigil of Remembrance, 1714 PSF.2
Appearance
Stone defenders are about four and a half feet tall, built to the size of a dwarf, with big shields fixed to their arms.2 They appear to run on crystalline magical cores.2
Behavior
The two in the workshop stood between the door and the workbenches, and came to life with a grinding of gears and crunching of stone when Luma picked up the Golem Control Rod.2 They block for each other rather than for themselves, and one went all the way round Iva to stand beside its partner.2 They hit hard enough to knock a person down.2 A shimmering magical barrier protected one from Luma’s faerie fire.2
The control rod threw one into confusion. Its head spun clean round as it scanned the room, and it repeated in Dwarvish, “target lost, target acquired, target lost, target acquired”. While confused it would not lift its shield for its partner, and on its turn it took Luma’s order to stand down at least in part.2 Destroyed, a stone defender cannot hold any animating magic.2
History
A dwarven crafter who researched constructs in secret wrote in his journal that his constructs did not listen, that his key did not work, and that he had put prototype control arrays into the working constructs.2
Session 11
Temerity cracked one defender’s stone with her hammer, and the pair knocked her down.2 Luma confused the other with the rod. The party wore down the first until Hazel’s magic shattered it.2 Rhysaene’s eldritch blast tore stone and metal from the confused defender, and Temerity knocked it off its feet. When it lay on the ground with its head still spinning, Temerity brought her hammer down on it, and it caved in on itself like a building being demolished.2
