Session 16 covered 3 Nightdeep to the night of 6 Nightdeep, 1714 PSF, in Argentum. Luma was fired from the Bureau of Infrastructure & Mapping, and Amber Deepdraft confessed that she had sent Luma into the sealed vaults. At the Stacks, Amber told the party about the Unbound, a group of archivists who believe the Synod of the Silver Flame is lying about the city’s history. Rurik Hulduro and Thaddeus Marwin questioned Luma about the survey, and Hazel sparred with Temerity outside the city. That night Rhysaene dreamed of a hidden book.
Synopsis
Morning
Temerity left Rhysaene's apartment around five in the morning for the Dragoon barracks, about ten minutes’ walk away.12 Rhysaene tried to reach out, in her memories and dreams, toward wherever Lathiel might have kept a ledger. It would take time.34 She went on with her painting, and Iva found a mirror and practiced her impression of herself.56
Luma, who does not sleep, had started work overnight on a scroll of locate object.78 She thought her maps might be able to find the ledger.910 The scroll needed a hundred crowns she did not have, and Rhysaene gave her ten platinum dragons from her desk. If the ledger was what she thought it was, she said, it would be worth a lot more.111213 “This is like the second most amount of money I’ve ever had,” said Luma.14 Scroll inks need only be of very high quality: the magic of a scroll comes from its maker.15 Luma bought them on her way to work, at a shop in the Lantern Wards that sells writing supplies, books and journals, in the ink-hungry district around the Bureau.1617
The Wetscales
There was no sparring on Temerity’s third day, and the training grew harder.18 The cadets learned the Draconic for left, right and other directions used in an operation, and ran drills through the courtyard as if moving through hostile ground.1819 About half of the ten were beginning to fall behind, their language poor and their movements sloppy.2021 Emeric Vael kept up, the most physically capable of them after Temerity, and Kyren Lenara, not built for it, kept up through sheer determination.2223 About five besides Temerity were managing. It was becoming clear that not everyone would make it.2425 Until then the language had meant memorizing words, and now it was going further.2627
Kyren was learning the language fastest. After Temerity, Emeric and Gianna Kirrane were the top of the class.2829 Gianna seemed capable but unmotivated, not sure she wanted to be there. Kyren is built like an academic.303132 Temerity asked Kyren to help her with the Draconic, and he was happy to.3334 Emeric, who had avoided her all morning, had been watching them, and chose that moment to join in.353637 Temerity offered to help Kyren build his muscles in return.38 Kyren had no business being there, Emeric said, and he had told him so.39 Then: “Look, I’m sorry. I underestimated you.”40 He had underestimated her capabilities, he said, and she was overestimating her understanding of what she was getting into.41 “Probably,” said Temerity, but she would not let what she did not understand stop her doing what she thought was right.4243 He rolled his eyes. To Kyren he said that if he insisted on trying to make it, he needed to work on his physical training far more than he had.44 Temerity heard concern in it, not the contempt Emeric had shown her.4546 Kyren did not know the language either, so they would learn it together.47
That afternoon Temerity studied with Kyren, who has a decent mind for languages, and gave him exercises to build the strength he lacked, including five sets of fifteen squats every day.48495051
Mama Kora
Hazel went to Mama Kora’s stall in the Canal Markets. Not many people were about, the smell and the stew being so bad.525354 Hazel ordered the fishbone stew and wrote on a scrap of paper what she wanted in it: a glass eye worth about a hundred crowns.555657 “Mmm, fish eyes! Unusual ingredient,” said Kora. It would be ready at sunset.58 She asked 120 crowns, and for the trouble last time settled at 110.5960 Hazel paid with eleven dragons and got a receipt, as before.6162
At sunset Kora took the receipt and handed Hazel a bowl of stew, which Hazel ate. “At least someone likes my cooking,” said Kora, and handed her a salt shaker.636465 “Keep in touch. I’m always happy to help a connoisseur.”66 The glass eye was the focus for a clairvoyance spell, and Hazel spent all her money on it.6768
Fired
Outside the Bureau that morning stood a dragonborn woman six or seven feet tall, with yellow-green scales and slitted yellow eyes, in bright plate bearing the lantern of the Order of the Lantern, with a massive greatsword across her back.697071 Her heraldry was that of the Inquisition guards in the basement of the Silver Archives.72 The head of the Bureau was in an important meeting, she said, and no one could go in until it was over.73 Luma waited with her.74 The sword had been her mother’s, passed on when her mother retired from the Stone Shields.7576 It had few stories: Stone Shields seldom have to use lethal force.7778 She had used it a couple of times, once a few years back in the south at Rivercross, as backup to a purifier sent after a Sorrowsworn, a horrible, deformed person.787980 She is a Censor, not a purifier, and usually works in the city. Censors hunt illegal mages, and many are charged with guarding important institutions.8182 She had also used her blade on a mage. They are very scary, she said.8384 Her name was Marigold.85
Two people came out. One was an older human man of average build, with receding dark hair parted and a little messy, a short beard and mustache, and a pince-nez, in a very nice but plain dark formal coat over a white collar.868788 The other was a sharp-featured woman in her thirties, with dark hair in a practical knot, a single streak of grey over her left eye, pale skin and dark brown eyes, in the layered formal robes of the Silver Archives. Luma knew her by sight: Vaestra Wenn, the head of the Silver Archives, whose title is curator.899091 Luma bowed, and they nodded and went on their way, with Marigold behind them.92
Inside, the office was quiet, and Kessa Tumblebrim sat at her desk, plainly distraught.9394 The curator had come with Lord Thaddeus Marwin, a member of the Lexicon, on behalf of the church.9596 Luma’s work order had not been authorized, and had been for highly restricted areas.96 Crying, Kessa told Luma that they had told her to fire her.97 She had told them Luma was her best employee, that the order looked official, that she had approved it and would take the blame, but if she held her ground they would fire them both. Someone very high up was pushing for it.9899100 Luma could take only her personal effects, and they wanted to interview her on the morning of the 6th, at the Silver Archives across the street.101102103 The delay was because of a much broader investigation at the Vaultsmiths’ guildhall, which was trying above all to learn who had issued the order. They had asked Kessa the same thing ten ways, and she did not know.104105106107
Nobody had told Kessa not to give Luma her severance, so she did: fifty crowns, her back pay and severance, in five neat stacks of ten.108109110 She gave Luma her home address in case she ever needed a reference, and promised to keep looking into it.111112 The Vaultsmiths always need blueprints, but she would have trouble there while the investigation went on.113 Luma thanked her for the job. “It was the best decision I ever made, and I stand by that.”114115 Luma left notes on all her unfinished work, wrote “I’m fine” on her wrist, and disguised herself so no one would see she had been crying.116117
Amber
In the alley between the Bureau and the Lexicon of Civil Notaries, Luma saw a short figure in plain clothes and a hooded cloak duck around the back of the building, the tip of a boot still showing round the corner.118119120121 When Luma walked up, the figure jumped. “Nope, this isn’t how the plan was.” She had rehearsed it.122123 She sent Luma back to the main road to meet her on the next road north.124 There, without the hood, she was a dwarven woman with light brown hair in a ponytail and a neatly braided beard.125126 Luma had met her twice before, the first time in the maintenance tunnels, the day Luma found the Tarnar Syndicate’s hidden door.127128129
“You look like you could use a drink,” she said. She knew a quiet bar in the southern Hearth Wall called the Stacks, and asked Luma to meet her there, that night if possible, and in any case before she talked to anyone from the Archives.130131 Luma could bring the friends who had gone into the vaults with her, but no one she did not trust.132133 Drinks were on her.134 Every time Luma said she had no job, the dwarf winced like someone who had taken the last cookie from the jar.135
Luma went back to Rhysaene’s the long way, kicking rocks.136137 Hazel kept watch from outside a bedroom window. The park was busy, and an Order of the Lantern patrol passed every so often.138139140 Rhysaene’s new painting was of a field being set alight, close to what she had been dreaming about.141142 Iva, now in her old Warden’s face, kicked open the bathroom door. “Freeze, mages, you’re under arrest.”143144 Luma told them she had been fired and would be interviewed in a few days, and that a Vaultsmith she knew wanted drinks that night.145146 The scroll would take her a few more hours.147148 Sage climbed onto the couch and laid his head in Luma’s lap, and she cheered up explaining her plan to him: a ritual casting like the witches’, to cover the whole city.149150151152 Rhysaene handed round honey cakes and boiled sweets.153154
The Stacks
The Stacks is a small one-story building in a dingy part of the southern Hearth Wall, with its front window covered and a bookshelf painted on its sign.155156157 Inside it smelled of old parchment, old books and a little mildew, of ale and of food not recently cooked.158159160 It was dim and nearly empty. An older human woman with very curly grey hair tended bar, pushing her little glasses back up her nose.160 The walls were lined with half-empty shelves of books in various states of disrepair.161 In the farthest corner sat the dwarf.162
“Ah, I’m glad you came, Luma.”163 Luma had forgotten her name, which had been lucky, since the Inquisitor had wanted it.164165 “My name is Amber, Amber Deepdraft.”166 She had been there a while, and several refills had not touched her.167 “Luma, I’m sorry. It’s my fault you got fired.”168 Forge was a strong word: she was a senior Vaultsmith, the work order was official, and she had simply not put her name on it.169 She had thought she could pull Luma’s report before anyone saw it, and had not known how closely certain forces in the Vaultsmiths were reading reports.170171 She had chosen Luma because Luma had found the secret door, and struck her as someone with an inquisitive mind. She had wanted to know what was in those vaults for years, and more than that, whether Luma was someone who could go digging.172173 Luma took a shovel out of her backpack, to make a point, and put it away.174
Amber had seen Luma’s report, and thought that if Luma revealed nothing beyond it she would be fine.175 She had never been into the sealed vaults herself.176 There was growing discontent, she said, with what the Synod was willing to report about the city’s history. Every year new inconsistencies turned up and were dismissed, and the people who raised them found themselves jobless, at best.177178179 Some believed it was not poorly recorded history but actively false, and wanted to know why.179180 “You took my dream job for a curiosity. You could have just asked,” said Luma. “No. No, I couldn’t have.”181182 Had she asked the wrong person, she could be in jail or worse, and she had no way to know which Luma was. It had been a test, and it had blown up in both their faces.183184 Luma wanted to know more.185
Hazel arrived and sat down, and declined a drink to keep her wits about her.186187188 Luma tried to claim she had gone into the vaults alone. Amber knew better.189190 She was done apologizing, she said, and was asking whether they wanted to be part of something. Luma had already said yes.191192
Amber took them to a side room with a bookshelf. In the main room she moved books from shelf to shelf, most at random. Rhysaene heard a faint click about every third book, and Iva saw that those books were much heavier than they should be.193194195 After about fifteen books came a second click, and Amber swung a bookshelf open onto a stair going down.196 On the way Luma gave the bartender a woven cord to keep her glasses from slipping, and they stayed up.197198 Amber pulled the bookshelf shut behind them.199 The basement was laid out like a bookshop, with a table in the middle holding open books and a big map.200
Amber belongs to a group of citizens who have concluded that the Synod of the Silver Flame is lying to them about a lot of things. They do not know how much, or why, but there are too many inconsistencies in the official records, and too much scrutiny over what should be mundane procedures, especially at the Vaultsmiths.201202203 The minting vaults where the master coiner works may be the most secure place in all of Argentum. Why?203204 Hazel told Temerity that this was her chance to choose. What the Synod said did not line up with what they had seen. If Temerity would not do it for them, Hazel said, she should do it for her flame and what it represents.205206207208 Temerity nodded, and signed to Amber to go on.209
Luma gave Amber her full report, which recorded everything: the mural, the coins, the journals she had transcribed, drawings of the graffiti, and the Tarnar Hole.210211212 Amber read it with deep interest. Rhysaene, Iva and Temerity saw her surprised by something in it, in the section on the residential vaults.213214215 It proved no specific lie, she said, but confirmed much of what they suspected: the residential warrens were sealed about as long ago as the Synod says, but hold things that have to be from before the Starfall.216217218 Luma let her copy it in her own words, arranged differently, so that it could not be traced to her.219220221
In return, Amber said, their door was open. If the party found secrets like these, they could bring them to the group, which would share what it knew.222223 Its members are mostly archivists, from the Silver Archives and the Bureau, who have seen too many inconsistencies and want to know why the records are wrong and why correcting them costs people their jobs, or worse. Some of them have taken the name the Unbound, but she would not pass it around.224225 “If the book only contains lies, what else are you going to do?”226
Asked about the Elder Exodus, Amber said that a little over 150 years ago the last dwarves living in the undercity of Argentum were strongly encouraged to move to the surface. They resisted, and the tension grew into the Exodus.227228 There were many cases of the Synod clashing with communities of elves or dwarves who would not follow its directives.228229 Rurik Hulduro called the Exodus an entirely voluntary act of arrogance.229 He is a senior archivist, technically connected to the Silver Archives but more an independent historian, and the Synod’s chief historical expert: he writes what counts as official history.230231 He is also her uncle, her mother’s half-brother.232233
Hazel remembered where she had heard the name Deepdraft: Riswynn Deepdraft, the child who wrote the note in Vault 17.234235 Hazel told Amber that Amber was not her real name. It was, Amber said, and a false name would be wiser for this sort of thing, but it was a work in progress.236237238 The note, she said, was her mother’s. There is a strong suspicion that the Exodus was meant to remove everyone who could remember the history being lied about.239240 Her mother stayed, and was nine at the final thrust of the Exodus.241242 Many families lost people. Hulduro wrote that they left from arrogance, and Amber said they had been driven off by whatever means the Synod had.243244 Amber had never heard of anyone surviving the Sorrow, but hoped Luma would find her great-grandfather.245 Her other uncle, Tordek, Rurik’s brother, left in the Exodus, blaming Rurik for what was happening to Argentum.246247 “We aren’t here because we know what the truth is. We’re here because we want to find it.”248 The mural, she said, had been especially interesting to read about.249
Hazel asked whether she would pay Luma for her trouble.250 It would be a miracle of the dead dragon god Bahamut, Amber said, if she kept her own job. Hiring Luma would draw suspicion back onto herself and make Luma look more involved.251252 As far as she knew, the investigators believed someone at the Vaultsmiths was compromised and that Luma had been caught up by chance. That was why Luma had lost her job instead of being hauled off to a cell at the Order barracks or Candlehold.253254 The group sometimes paid for information and for couriers to carry sensitive material, and she would see what could be spared.255256 She knew nothing of the hate aura.257 When Luma mentioned getting a Tarnar Turnstone, Amber scowled: working with the Tarnar Syndicate was not a good idea. She had told Luma the same the day they first met.258259 She had not known what a Turnstone was, and had assumed the Syndicate used forbidden magic.260261
To open the stair, one of them had to remember the combination: from left to right, blue, red, yellow, green, brown. The pressure plates are always at the far right end of their row, and the right books are the heavy ones. The combination changes from time to time.262263264 The bartender is a family friend who keeps their secrets but is not part of the group and knows nothing.265266 The two patrons upstairs were members.267 Amber’s mother designed the lock, and the Stacks is her place, though few know it. The bartender is Maris Kettle, and if anyone asks, she is the owner.268269
Temerity asked what purification means.270 Amber did not know. They suspected the Order simply killed the mages, but had no evidence beyond never hearing from them again.271272 It might be done at Candlehold. On rare occasions a small caravan leaves the Order of the Lantern barracks by the gate there and takes the road north out of the city, which goes nowhere but Candlehold.273274275 The party had passed Candlehold a few times, on the other side of the river.276277 The caravans usually leave in the early morning through the northwest gate, and a contact of Amber’s said that was why the barracks was built there and not in the Lantern Wards, near the gate on the road to Candlehold.278279 “That’s not our history, that’s our now.”280
Upstairs, where the bar serves only cheap whiskey and ale, Luma talked the bartender through a dreadful mix of every whiskey she had, and got very drunk.281282283284 Temerity and Hazel did not drink, and Rhysaene had a glass at most. Temerity was still guarding her.285286287 Luma finished the scroll.288 Hazel asked Temerity how the Dragoon training was going, and was unimpressed to hear it was mostly Draconic. Did Temerity really think learning Draconic would help her fight the Sorrowsworn?289290291292 What would help, Temerity said, was the fang the Dragoons carry and the blessing of Bahamut.293 Luma, who speaks Draconic, offered to teach her, and Temerity accepted: it was the hardest part of her training.294295
Outside, Hazel drew Temerity into an alley. She had been trained, loosely, in disposing of Sorrowsworn, and if Temerity wanted to learn from her, she could. The Dragoons were not the only way.296297298 Temerity agreed to spar, some other time, somewhere secluded where no one would see Hazel’s magic.299300301 “I thought you’d have more trust in me, Temerity,” said Hazel.302 They all spent the night at Rhysaene’s.303
The Interview
The next two days passed quietly. Iva checked her dead drops every night and found nothing.304305 Rhysaene could feel something through her connection, like a muscle she had never stretched, but it had not borne fruit.306307 Temerity’s training went on, with more Draconic.308 Luma, with time on her hands, oiled the hinges and refinished the furniture in Rhysaene’s apartment while she worried.309310
On the morning of 6 Nightdeep Luma went alone to the Silver Archives, got there at sunrise, and waited until the doors opened at seven.311312313 She was taken to an office in the basement, on the floor from which they had gone down into the vaults.314 Waiting were the man with the pince-nez and an old dwarf, his hair and beard grey with a silvery look, gnarled and wrinkled with age, with a little notebook in front of him.315316317318 The man introduced himself as Thaddeus Marwin, a solicitor with the Lexicon of Civil Notaries and lead legal counsel for the Synod of the Silver Flame.319320 The dwarf was Oldstone Archivist Rurik Hulduro, who would conduct the interview about her unauthorized access to two sections of sealed vault.321 “I had a work order,” said Luma. “Yeah, we know all about that. Please just answer the questions.”322323 It was a procedural review, Marwin said, not a hearing, and she was not under arrest.324325
Luma walked them through the assignment.326327 “Talk to me like a surveyor,” said Hulduro, in a deep, gravelly voice, and asked what each vault had been for.328329 Vaults 13 to 15 looked like forges, 16 was too damaged to say, 17 and 18 were residential, and 19 was a kitchen and communal space.330331332 The air had been middling to fair, and the bird she brought survived.333 She said she saw no sign that anyone had been there before them, but she looked conflicted as she said it, and added, “I guess if you count monsters.”334335336 She described the fire snakes, the rust monsters, the animated armor and the burning armor, and the creatures in the kitchen that made darkness.337338 Marwin wondered whether that last was some kind of Sorrowsworn. “Nah,” said Hulduro. “Damn darkmantles. Come up from below sometimes.”339 She explained why she had pacified the fire snakes, and how she had judged the broken portcullis no seal.340341
Marwin asked her to account for her fifty crowns of supplies and the two hundred crowns of security money, with the names of those she hired.342 She had bought supplies for four masks and hired three people at fifty crowns each, keeping fifty for a fourth she decided against. She named Rhysaene, Temerity and Iva Carpenter, with Temerity a Dragoon in training and the others unaffiliated.343344345346 They had never been out of the same room, she said.347348 Hulduro asked why her report said so little about the contents of the residential vaults. That was not her job, she said.349350 Of the concealed door in an apartment, she said she had found the seam by hand, could not open it, and so counted it sealed and did not touch it.351352 The hole in the forge wall she put down to seismic activity or burrowing monsters, and the hole behind the kitchen cabinet to monsters, beyond the bounds of the vault.353354
Asked whether she had found any writing she had left out, she said there had been graffiti in Dwarvish, outside the bounds of the order.355356 Hulduro asked what it said. She had not really read it, she said: names, perhaps, like someone marking where they should not be.357358 He asked whether any of her security could read Dwarvish, and she said none of them could.359360
They found her innocent of any crime.361 The forge vaults, Marwin said, were sealed because of dangerous seismic activity that meddling could set off, and the residential vaults could hold poisons or other unknown hazards. She should have checked with a proper authority.362363 Her firing, ordered by the head archivist of the Silver Archives, Vaestra Wenn, stood, but she was not suspected of wrongdoing.364365 If she remembered anything else she had found, she was to tell the Archives at once, since withholding knowledge from those vaults was a serious offense, with the highest punishment available.365366 “Higher than getting fired from my dream job?” “Considerably higher.”367368
Back at Rhysaene’s, Luma announced that Rurik Hulduro was mean.369370 She had left Hazel off the list of her security, since Hazel has no papers, and told the others not to mention her.371372 The interviewers had been fishing to find out whether the party had seen anything they should not have, which they had, and had told her nonsense about seismic activity and poisons.373374 “I’m going to get to the bottom of this. And I have so much free time.”375376 The scroll could not be used until Rhysaene knew what the ledger was like.377378 Considering scrying, Hazel sensed that the hate aura had been something that touched the mind or soul rather than the body, and that trying to divine it could be dangerous.379380
The Spar
When Temerity came back, she raised the spar in front of everyone.381 Apart from the promise of a fang, Hazel said, the Dragoons offered her nothing she could not have with them.382 “Well, Bahamut’s dead. He can’t bless shit.”383 The Outer Works sprawl about three miles out from the Hearth Wall, so they walked two hours into the country, to a copse of trees on the rolling plains of the Silver Vale, six miles from Argentum, with the others coming to watch.384385386387 With her longbow, Hazel scratched a ring on a natural shelf of stone. One edge of it bent inward: since the moon was broken, she could not help making a circle imperfect.388389390
“You’ve seen what the Sorrow does,” said Hazel. “It twists, mutates, changes the natural order.” To face something that unpredictable, Temerity should fight something that worked the same way. “You know what the Shattered Mother grants me. So face me.”391392393 Temerity would not start in a rage against a friend.394
Sage ran in barking, and while Temerity was distracted, Hazel became a dire wolf and knocked her down.395396397 Temerity rose in a rage, silver fire flickering over her skin, hammered Hazel twice and knocked her flat.398399400 Hazel took her own shape and healed herself. Since Hazel was unarmed, Temerity dropped her hammer and fought on with her fists.401402403 Hazel healed again and cut her with a silver sickle that glistened in the moonlight.404405 Temerity’s punches brought her low, and she became a brown bear, roaring in Temerity’s face, and healed herself once more, moonlight stitching her wounds.406407408409 Temerity picked up her hammer and knocked her down again.410411 Hazel took her own shape, put up her hands, and yielded.412 The fire went out of Temerity, and they shook hands. “Good fight.” Hazel laughed, blood dripping from her mouth.413414415
Walking back, Temerity hoped it had been useful to her. It had not been for Hazel, who had known Temerity would beat her, but she had expected more.416417418 Why had Temerity dropped her weapon? Temerity did not want to kill her. She would not have, Hazel said: that, she could guarantee.419420421422 Would she drop her weapon against the Sorrow? Not against the Sorrowsworn, Temerity said, “but you’re not a Sorrowsworn.”423424425 Hazel frowned and walked on. “You haven’t done anything wrong. But that’s all that I had.”426
The Dream
They spent the night at Rhysaene’s, on beds she set out around the apartment.427428 Rhysaene dreamed of a beating heart. She wandered from her bedroom to the hall, the living room and the kitchen, following it, and from the kitchen onto a stage lit with candles, where she could not see out into the audience.428429430 The heartbeat led her backstage into a room full of props, and behind them to a place in the floorboards.430431 She pried it open. There was nothing inside, but she was holding a plain leather-bound book with a simple latch strapped shut. She put it into the cubby, covered it with the floorboards, and woke the next morning.431432
